Photograms: Making a photogram

Now that you have made your test strip, it's time to make your first Photogram! So in this post I am going to be explaining how you can make a photogram.

To make a photogram you will need:
1.An enlarger or a source of light (A phones will work, but be careful)
2.Light sensitive paper
3. A darkroom
4. Objects of your choice
5.And last of all, chemicals to develop your image

Step by step:

1. Choose some objects that you think would work well to convey the message you would like to come across in your image. If you don't want there to be a message you can just choose some objects you think will make a nice pattern, or look nice. I recommend flowers and water in a small jar or a bottle. (the effect it has is simply beautiful)

2.(If you're using an Enlarger you're going to need to check where the light will be shining before placing your paper on the base plate) Once you have chosen the objects you want to use, place them on your light sensitive paper, move them around till you're happy with the arrangement. Remember that 3D objects will have a shadow.

3. (skip this step if you're not using an enlarger) If you are using an enlarger make sure that the f stop is either on 8 or 11, this will insure that the contrast between black and white is sharp. Using the timer, put it on 10 seconds. Press the red button, this will start the countdown and will shine the light for that period of time. make sure you don't touch the objects as this will effect the image.

4. If you're using a phone, don't use the flashlight setting as the light that shines is too harsh and the image will just come out black. Use the light that comes off of it when it's on it's home screen, make sure you only do this for 1 or 2 seconds, anymore and you just get a black image. Make sure you don't touch the objects as this will effect the image.

5. Now it's time to develop...click here

In the next few posts, I will be explaining the different effects you can do for your photogram. So stay tuned!
